The two pillars of the metaverse noted at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) were ’Virtualization‘ and ‘Immersion', and ’Digital Olfactory’ was selected as a technology to accelerate ‘Immersion’. The olfactory metaverse technology maximizes the sense of immersion by providing olfactory (digital scent) stimulation in addition to audiovisual to improve the realism of contents.
The olfactory metaverse technology is being developed as a factor technology for implementing applications in the form of physical persistence and fusion with the real world based on extended reality (XR) technology such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). As the strong associative effect of olfactory technology improves the reality of contents, it is expected that its use in existing entertainment applications and especially in education will be effective.
